Museo della Contrada del Drago
Exhibition in Siena of Palio banners, costumes and religious artefacts.
Via del Paradiso, 1, 53100 Siena SI, Italy
The Museum of the Drago Neighbourhood is in the 17th century Oratory of Santa Caterina del Paradiso (St Catherine of Siena) and its annexes, assigned to the neighbourhood in 1788. On display are former costumes, old flags, the masgalani (awards for best appearance in the parades) and Palio banners won by the neighbourhood. In the tiny church dedicated to St Catherine you can admire beautiful paintings by seventeenth-century Sienese artists including F. Rustici, R. Vanni and D. Manetti, and a bust of the saint by L. Marrina, dating from 1517. In the sacristy there is a fifteenth-century wooden Crucifixion. Among the banners won by the neighbourhood, the one from 1724 is particularly interesting.
