Museo della Contrada della Chiocciola
This Museum of sacred artefacts was the first of its kind in Siena
The Museum of the Chiocciola neighbourhood contains religious furnishings and vestments belonging to the neighbourhood. Opened on 25th June 1981, it was the first of its kind in Siena; it is housed in the crypt of the Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo (Church of Saints Peter and Paul), dating from the seventeenth century. In the Sala delle Vittorie (Hall of Victories) are displayed the Palii (Palio banners) won by the neighbourhood, the masgalani (awards for the best appearance in the parades), objects relating to the Palio, and costumes that are no longer used, made in 1878, 1904, 1925 and 1957.
