SECOND STAGE

Leaving Vescona you head towards Serre di Rapolano, but before you reach this enchanting village, you have to travel the various dirt tracks that criss-cross the Tuscan countryside. Soon after leaving Vescona you reach Monte Sante Marie, an important archaeological site from the time when the Lombards held this part of the country. Carrying on, you enter the typical village of Asciano, which has a very devout atmosphere thanks to the devotional plaques in many alleys and cross- streets, dedicated to the cult of the Madonna, a demonstration of the veneration this community had for the Virgin Mary. Heading out of the historic centre you reach the Parish church of Saint Hyppolitus, the oldest church in the area, which can only be visited by booking in advance. The route continues through the fields until it reaches the village of Serre di Rapolano.
