A tour of the roofs of Siena Cathedral

The Gate of Heaven in Siena is an extremely fascinating route that leads to the rooftops of Siena Cathedral. This visit is only possible at certain times of the year. Every year, in fact, certain areas of the Duomo that are not usually open to the public are opened. From March to October, it is possible to visit the roofs, galleries and a number of rooms that house wonderful works of art. 

A visit to the Gate of Heaven in Siena: an experience of rare beauty  

Having the chance to see the cathedral of Siena from a unique perspective and being able to visit secret places is an unmissable opportunity that comes once in a blue moon. When you arrive at the cathedral, you can choose to be accompanied on your tour by an expert guide, who will explain the cathedral’s history along with anecdotes from the past, transporting you back in time for about an hour and a half. During this tour, you will be overwhelmed by the fascinating and timeless beauty of the cathedral’s Romanesque-Gothic architecture

The tour begins by ascending a circular staircase in one corner of the church. Once at the top of the cathedral, an alternating itinerary begins between the interior and exterior: it will leave you speechless. During the visit, you can observe statues that are not normally visible. Along the way, you will come across the mosaic windows of the dome. Take a few moments to admire the details of the rose window in the façade. From this elevated perspective, you will fully appreciate the detail and craftsmanship that characterises thefloor of the cathedral

Continuing your visit, you will arrive at the outer part of the dome: a truly unique vantage point will appear before your eyes. The priceless view in front of you will leave you open-mouthed. From here you can admire Siena in all its splendour, including the Torre del Mangia and the basilica of San Domenico. From the left aisle you will see the Medicean Fortress and the Sienese hills.

Prices and viewing times for the Gates of Heaven in Siena 

The timetables for visiting the Gates of Heaven vary throughout the year. During the covered floor period: 

  • From 1 April to 31 October: Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 19:00 and Sunday from 13:30 to 18:00.
  • From 1 November to 31 March: Monday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. 
  • 26 December to 6 January: Monday to Saturday 10:30 to 18:00, public holidays 1:30 to 17:30, and public holidays 10:30 to 17:30.

Conversely, the period when the floor is uncovered runs from 27 June to 31 July and from 18 August to 17 October  with the following opening hours: 10:00 to 19:00 p.m., on public holidays 9:30 to 18:00. Last entry 30 minutes before closing time. 

It is possible to purchase a single ticket that allows access to the Gates of Heaven, the Cathedral and all the museums in the same complex. The cost of the ticket is: 

  • adults: 20.00 euro
  • children (7 to 11 years): 5 euros 
  • children (under 6 years): free admission
