Museo della Contrada della Torre

The museum carefully preserves its secular historical archives. The story of the neighbourhood comes alive through the Drappelloni (Palio banners) and costumes of the Palio and in other furnishings. Among the important historic artefacts rediscovered during recent rebuilding work are a fifteenth-century grain pit, in the shape of a demijohn, excavated in the rock, built to store reserves of vital cereal; a section of the city walls from the early thirteenth century; a water cistern of Roman date; and an underground Etruscan tomb dating from the second century BC.
